By the time he was 16, he was very familiar with cars. Through his twenties, they were an everyday part of his life. Even so, when I met him, he still didn’t know how to drive. He was born and raised in Manhattan. There was never a need for him to own a car and learn to drive so, he never did.
Just because you’re familiar with vehicles doesn’t mean you know how to drive one. And then there are those who have been driving for years but are poor drivers – they never learned well. A poor driver is an accident waiting to happen.
And just because you bought a new car doesn’t mean it will continue to look good and run well. It has to be maintained and properly serviced. Without regular maintenance, you’re car is going to run poorly, the tires will go out of alignment . . . and, it won’t fix itself.
Marriage is exactly like that! Before we’re married, we’re familiar with it but we don’t really know what it means to mesh every aspect of our life with another person. Even little things can develop into big problems. Unless we choose to learn how to grow, mature, and love God’s way, we won’t ever have a marriage relationship that avoids the dangers and pitfalls of navigating this life.
Even the most expensive, high quality car or truck you buy needs regular maintenance. Your marriage is no different! Yet many are completely unaware of how to properly maintain their relationship with their wife or husband.
When you encounter two people with an awesome marriage, it’s not because the couple just got lucky and won the marriage lottery. They’ve learned that they, too, need to invest in, cultivate, and regularly maintain their relationship. And, they’ve taken action!
