When I was in college, a friend and I rented an apartment from a Christian “power couple.” They had done it all in ministry. And their marriage . . . straight out of Cinderella. The problem was that we saw how they actually lived, day after day, after the admiring eyes of the public were far away. Every interaction at home was a constant stream of negativity, snipping at each other, sarcastic responses – you get the picture. They had developed the bad, destructive habit of speaking harshly, negatively, and sarcastically to each other. I doubt they realized how far they had fallen.
Sometimes we’re downright amazing how we can put on a smile for the public but at home our communication with our spouse resembles a couple of seagulls arguing over a dead fish on the beach (sorry, I’m from Oregon!).
Habits are powerful, setting the course of our lives for years to come. Funny thing is, bad habits are exactly the same with just as much power to affect how we live, think, and act.
Do you have any bad habits in your marriage? Are there any ways you are interacting with your spouse that are downright negative? Let’s remember something. Just because it’s a habit doesn’t mean it’s not sin. How easily we get comfortable with the “smaller” sins – like the sin of negative, cutting communication with our spouse.
Is your communication with your spouse loving, peaceful, and positive when no one is looking? Or, is there a pattern of negative communication in your home? How did you develop that habit? Is this how you were called to walk with your husband/wife?
For many, it’s time for a big change. It’s time to say ‘No!’ to this sinful path – a path that closes the heart of your spouse one cutting comment at a time. Things may seem okay but you’re foolish if you don’t come to understand you are incrementally extinguishing the flame in your spouse’s heart. FAITHFUL LIFE podcast takes on this bad communication habit (sin!) and explores how the Word calls you to walk and talk with the person to whom you vowed to love for life. Join Lisa and me for a great, and yes, positive, discussion about this important aspect of enjoying a peaceful home life and a relationship that can grow closer and deeper.
