So, let me guess . . . communication in your marriage is always smooth, easy, tension-free, positive, and usually ends with everyone feeling heard and understood.
For some, maybe, but for most . . . not so much! Most husbands and wives have to work hard to communicate clearly and positively. As I look back on our marriage, there are times I can laugh at now but weren’t so funny in the moment!

Isn’t it great to be right? It makes you feel so smart! There have been several times when I was 100% sure I had listened and understood perfectly everything Lisa was thinking and feeling and that I had been crystal clear in my communication . . . only to discover I got the percentage a little wrong . . . like, 100% wrong! Not so smart.
Have you ever looked at your wife and wondered, ‘What planet are you from?’ And, yes, Lisa has wondered the same about me, at times! And, let’s remember, raising the volume and the temperature never helps in marriage communication and is a sure indicator that we are walking the flesh, not the Spirit.
Couples could laugh more about how wrong they’ve gotten it at times if the consequences and the pain of being misunderstood weren’t so serious in the moment. What is it that contributes so powerfully to husbands and wives missing the mark so often when it comes to being heard and understood?
To find that sweet spot of positive communication and a culture of peace in the home, guys, it starts with you. You’re leading. Where is your leadership in speaking with your wife taking your marriage? Do you truly understand what is behind the way your wife communicates to you? Do you realize what contributes to the way she is feeling in any given moment?
When you genuinely understand these things and put that knowledge into practice, your wife will begin to feel heard and understood – a powerful force in her heart and the foundation of peaceful, positive communication in your marriage. So get smart! Grow in understanding and enjoy the blessings that come with living with your wife according to knowledge – 1 Peter 3:7 – it’s the topic of todays podcast. Listen in.. It’s the short format Marriage Weekend edition – only 12 minutes – but it will make a massive positive difference in how you understand and interact with the woman God gave you to spend your life with.
