My way is right! Not hard to understand . . . it just is!
Maybe we never say these words but often in marriage, we don’t have to. It’s the unmistakable message our husband/wife gets after discussing an issue, preference, or a way of doing something. And, how does that make you feel? Helpless? And, how do you respond? Anger, frustration . . . or do you pray when your spouse digs in?
I’d love to be able to say I’ve never communicated this to Lisa, but I have. Not because I wanted to. Not because I tried to. It’s just what she understood my position to be the time she asked me not to do something she didn’t like and I had no intention of changing.
Many times in marriage it’s not a sin issue – just something we want the other person to start, stop, or change. And, that’s what it was with us not long ago . . . but I wasn’t having any of it! Lisa calls it my “brick wall mode” and she felt helpless.
What do you do when you want your spouse to change – again, not a sin issue under discussion here, just something important you want to be different – and it’s not happening . . . what do you do then? Does this sound like a situation in your marriage, right now, and your feeling like there’s nothing you can do?
There’s a powerful place you can go, yet so many husbands and wives forget they are not helpless. The inclination may be to fight, argue, and become resentful or bitter, but there is a far better way. Why is it that taking our concerns to the Lord in prayer is often a last resort instead of our first move? The power of prayer in your marriage – that’s the topic of Marriage Weekend Edition of FAITHFUL LIFE podcast: Are You Missing Out on the Power of Prayer in Your Marriage? When God is invited in, change happens . . . and we often discover it isn’t only our spouse where He’s bringing a beautiful change! Join us today.
