Lisa and I were trying to be discreet but when your wife laughs at your jokes, what can you do? It was a small café so she kept giving me those “stop making us make so much noise” eyes. But I didn’t care. One of my goals in life is to make her laugh.
We couldn’t help noticing the couple at a near table, though. Holding up his hand to stop her, mid-sentence, as he took a call, correcting her or cutting her off, over and over again. I couldn’t help thinking of respect in relationships and I thought, “Dude, you are destroying your marriage.”
So I went home and created a graphic with this message, “The man who doesn’t respect his wife is in the process of destroying his marriage” and posted it on social media. I didn’t expect what followed!
They came at me like lions trying to take down a water buffalo. These guys were hard-core theology types and I had crossed a line and needed to be attacked!
“The Bible does not require a man to respect his wife! It only requires a woman to respect her husband! You’re teaching heresy”
It’s impossible to have a conversation when someone is chewing on your neck so, my finger hovers over that delete button (Thank you FaceBook!) and if things get snarky, I dispatch the carnivores to their next engagement.
There is one verse in the Bible, though, that people point to when making this argument and, you’ll hear plenty of sermons on the topic of wives respecting their husbands. Not so much the other way around. Why is that? Does the Bible really teach that a man has to love his wife but doesn’t have to respect her?
We explore this discussion today on FAITHFUL LIFE podcast and invite you join the conversation! The Word, as it turns out, says some hard things . . . but then it will surprise you, too!
