How to Avoid Selfishness When Serving Those You Love

When we serve, are we serving from a pure heart – with no ulterior motive, no side agenda, no endgame in mind? We often tell ourselves we’re serving, we’re helping, we’re meeting needs but so often, that service is a lot more about what we are and aren’t willing to do rather than sacrificially offering what the other person truly needs.

Is the serving you do more about what you want than about what the other person needs? What would your husband or wife say? How about your kids, or the people that know you and have observed how your respond when needs arise? Most of all, what would our Lord say as He looks into your heart and assess your true motives and actions?

This is the question Lisa and I ask on the podcast this week – What does genuine biblical servanthood look like? Jesus is our example. He told us He came to serve, not to be served, and he proved it on the cross.

It’s quite common to be willing to serve people on our own terms. But truly laying down our lives for others? Not so common.

Who are we really serving? I think we know the answer – and it often isn’t the other person, is it? The truth is, we may be offering some help but only if it doesn’t compromise our agenda, our schedule, our priorities, or our comfort threshold. Someone might argue, “Well, it’s better than nothing!” Is that biblical servanthood or are we really just serving ourselves?

This week, we’re encouraging everyone to look inward, to assess where they are truly at in this vital aspect of being a disciple of Jesus Christ and living it out in our relationships with others. Are you a true biblical servant to your spouse, your kids, the people at Church and in your community? Join us as we explore the topic . . . it’s a deep question for all of us who call ourselves “Christian”.
