Kanye West makes a big splash wherever he goes. Now, he’s jumped into the baptismal and the water has hardly had time to settle as he makes the rounds on secular and religious media speaking of his newfound faith. Kanye is a Christian!
By all accounts, it sounds authentic. Listen to Kanye for a few minutes and a bold declaration of faith is soon forthcoming. The man is not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! He has taken to touring the U.S. – soon the world, no doubt – holding Sunday services that combine singing, dancing, and preaching. People love it and are flocking to these events. Oh, and you can get his new hoodie with an inspiring message on it for $250. Isn’t it awesome that an international superstar rapper is leading people to follow Jesus Christ?
Maybe. But how long will it last? On the scale of maturity, Kayne is a baby Christian, a novice. Of course, we should celebrate that a lost lamb was found but should we take that same lamb and make him the shepherd? Should Christians look to a new convert for guidance, instruction, and example?
Well, maybe we should . . . because looking to Christian leaders who have been believers for decades has caused many to question their faith. Did you hear about the two women who left the faith in the reports about Christian comedian John Crist preying on them?
How many people are questioning their faith because Josh Harris has left the building called “the Church”? When Jimmy Swaggart chose sin, how many left the faith, never to return? Who will fall next?
But don’t worry. There are still celebrity pastors who are faithful and true, like Francis Chan and John Piper. And then there are the faithful pastors of local Churches everywhere. Thank goodness there are still Christian leaders to follow! But, how long will these remain faithful? Who knows? You never know for sure, do you?
If the Christian Post announced today that John Piper and/or Franklin Graham have marriage trouble and are heading for divorce, would it rock your faith?
The headlines will keep coming. What will it take for your faith to remain strong? It depends who you’ve put your faith in. This is the topic we’re discussing on the podcast, today – join us below and ask yourself, who am I really following?
