Gratitude: Are You Meeting the Deep Need in Your Wife’s Heart?

Are you grateful for your wife? Most husbands that call themselves “Christian” (maybe most husbands, in general) would answer ‘yes’ to this question. “Of course I’m grateful for her!”

Does your wife know you are grateful for her? Does she know you sincerely appreciate her and all she does for you, your kids, and your home? Those same husbands will likely still answer ‘yes’ but with a little less confidence. “Yes, I think she knows I’m grateful.”

Are you one of those men who confidently say you are grateful for your wife? Then I have one more question. When was the last time you stopped, took your wife in your arms, looked into her eyes, and told her three things you are deeply grateful for?”

If husbands are so grateful, why do so many wives feel so completely undervalued, unappreciated, and even unseen by their husbands? Lisa and I often hear from wives, “He doesn’t appreciate anything I do for him or for our home. He never says anything.”

So, why the big divide between how husbands feel and the experience wives often have?

If gratitude toward your wife is something you feel but not something you express on a regular basis, it may give you a warm, fuzzy feeling but it does nothing for your wife. The only gratitude that matters in marriage is gratitude that is expressed.

Your wife is a good woman and she wants . . . no, she needs . . . to know that you appreciate her. She needs to hear from you on a regular basis that you are grateful for her and all she does. Of course, you need gratefulness, too, but you’re the spiritual leader, remember? You get to set the example. If you want a responsive wife, you must respond to the deepest needs of her heart.

Why not take this week to demonstrate to her that you are, indeed, grateful for the amazing gift that your wife is? All you have to do is open your mouth and express to her how you feel.

For some, the words come easy. For others, not so much! That’s why on the podcast today, we mentioned the new books we wrote: 100 Words of Affirmation Your Wife Needs to Hear & 100 Words of Affirmation Your Husband Needs to Hear. These books will remind you of the many ways you are grateful for your spouse. And, there’s a great discount when you pre-order them together! They are published in about a week.
