When You’re Busy Loving Each Other There’s Less Time For Temptation

That Christians and Christianity have the reputation for being a little “up tight” when it comes to the subject of sex should make everyone laugh, it really should.

Talk about unbiblical! First of all, there was a garden, where God placed a naked man and woman . . . husband and wife, and said all He had created was, “ . . . very good.” No disagreement there. Clothes didn’t show up until sin did.

In Proverbs 5:18, 19 we are admonished to . . .

Let your fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of your youth. Let her be as the loving deer and graceful doe; let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and be ravished always with her love.

Then there’s the Song of Songs. Remove the flowery language about fruit and you’ve got a solid “R” rating – the way God intended a husband and wife to enjoy each other.

“Up tight” and biblical Christianity just don’t go together. God created. It was very good. If we would just read our Bibles, the world has absolutely nothing to teach Christians about the way of a man with a maid.

There is a practical side to all this, as well. When we’re busy loving each other, there’s less time for temptation. Satan does some of his best work when we’re distracted from our spouses. When we allow the busyness of life to stuff itself into the limited hours we have, not making physical intimacy a priority, we’re creating fertile ground for temptation.

In 1 Corinthians 7:2 – 5, husbands and wives are warned of this very danger.

“ . . . to avoid sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her sexual rights and, likewise also the wife should do the same. The wife does not have power over her own body, but the husband; and likewise, also, the husband does not have power over his own body, but the wife. Don’t deprive one another, sexually, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then, come together again, so Satan may not tempt you . . .”

God instructs through His Word that husbands and wives are to make love often. Does this describe your marriage?

If not, make sure you’re not the responsible party because those who are have set themselves in opposition to the teaching of Scripture and created the grounds for temptation in their spouses.

So, on the one hand, let’s laugh at the ridiculous claim that the Bible teaches sexual repression. But, on the other, let’s enjoy our spouses as we also take seriously the warning of Scripture regarding our marriages and how to diminish temptation.
